BIRTH the book was born from the website birth.com.au, a labour of love conceived in 1999 by my close friend Sandra Robinson.

I grew up in western Sydney as the eldest of 9 children. After finishing school, I completed my general nursing and then travelled the world for nine months before becoming a midwife in 1987. From there I worked in public and private hospitals, birth centres and in home birth, being with countless women and their families on their journey to parenthood, ‘catching’ over 1200 babies in the process and still counting. Being at the births of all my 6 nieces/nephews have been truly special privileges. Along the way I completed a degree in nursing, a postgraduate degree in community midwifery and a Master of women’s health, majoring in a research project on water birth. Writing BIRTH was a satisfying challenge that fulfilled my dream to be able to recommend the perfect pregnancy and birth book that was suitable for all prospective parents preparing for the birth of their baby, such a momentous event!

Having now stepped back from my role as a website administrator, currently working in a Sydney public hospital as a Midwifery Consultant. In my spare time I love being with my gorgeous husband and soul mate of over 30 years, Peter Fitzpatrick, as well as my two beautiful sons Hugh and Callum, who are fast becoming fine young men. I might find time to squeeze in the odd movie, dinner out and perhaps a game of golf.
